Artist Statement and Biography
Textiles are central to her practice, partly because of their intimate association with the human body. The physical engagement with materials and the process of making are fundamental to her work. It is often through her own body’s interaction with materials - touching, manipulating, stitching, wrapping and constructing- that ideas begin to emerge and take form.
Maria is interested in the traces we leave on the everyday objects that surround us, as well as the conversations we have and the stories we carry throughout our lives. Carefully selected objects are juxtaposed with textile elements, creating metaphors for the body, identity, relationships and lived experience. Words, fragments of conversations and personal narratives are woven into the work, allowing language and material to coexist and create new meanings.
Maria is a member of Prism and regularly exhibits in London and nationally.
